Toronto pitcher tears ACL

Shoemaker has a torn ACL in his left knee, cutting short yet another promising season for the oft-injured right-hander.

Shoemaker was hurt at the end of a rundown Saturday, and Toronto announced the diagnosis and will undergo surgery though no date has been set. The 32-year-old is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in five starts in his first season with Toronto.

The Rays have placed outfielder Austin

Meadows on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb.

Meadows was hurt when he awkwardly slid into third base on a two-run triple in the seventh inning of Saturday night’s 6-5 loss to the Red Sox. He called it a “freak accident.”

The 23-year-old right fielder said an MRI exam showed some damage and that he would be examined by a hand specialist.

Meadows is hitting .351 with six homers and 19 RBIs in 20 games.

Snell closing in on return

Rays ace Blake Snell (fractured right fourth toe) is expected to have his second bullpen session Tuesday and is eligible to come off of the injured list Wednesday.

Votto rests balky back

Joey Votto missed his second straight game, a 4-3 loss to the Padres on Sunday, with a sore back. Votto will get at least one more day of rest as the Reds have a day off Monday.

Lester nears rejoining Cubs

Pitcher Jon Lester seems poised to return to the rotation, as the Cubs have an opening Thursday against the Dodgers. Lester missed the past two weeks with a strained hamstring, but got through a simulated game Saturday without any issues.
