Callaway not concerned about Rosario errors

- By GREG JOYCE

ST. LOUIS — Amed Rosario has f ive errors in his past f ive games, but the Mets shortstop shouldn’t expect a day off any time soon.

“We don’t have another shortstop, so he’s not getting a day,” manager Mickey Callaway said after the Mets fell to the Cardinals 6-4 Sunday at Busch Stadium. “No, he’s f ine.”

Rosario’s f irst of two f ielding errors Sunday was the most costly. It came on a weak ground ball from Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson in the bottom of the second as Rosario couldn’t field it cleanly, loading the bases with one out in a 1-1 game. Two batters later, Paul Goldschmidt cracked a two-run single and the Cardinals led the rest of the way.

The second error came in the seventh inning when Rosario booted a ground ball by Jose Martinez. The Mets got out of the inning unscathed, but the damage was already done.

“Obviously he’s made some errors this week, but I’m not concerned,” Callaway said. “He works hard. He’ll clean that up. He’ll get going. That one play on the pitcher’s hit, that was a tough one. He got blocked out by [third baseman Jeff ] McNeil. Any time the guy’s running in front of you and he just misses it, you lose sight of the ball for a second. That’s a tough one. It’s probably still an error, but it’s a tough play.

“The other one, he just didn’t make the play. He’ll be f ine.”

The Mets had a true backup shortstop in Luis Guillorme, but they optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse last Monday for bullpen help. McNeil is currently the backup shortstop, but he hasn’t played there since 2015 in the minor leagues.

Another option to be the backup shortstop — by playing out of position — is Todd Frazier, who played his second rehab game with Syracuse on Sunday. Coming back from an oblique injury, after playing 11 rehab games with Single-A St. Lucie, he started at shortstop and went 0-for-2 with a walk. He played four innings at shortstop and the final five at third base, his natural position.

Callaway said the Mets would meet to discuss whether Frazier would be ready to be activated by Monday.

Jacob deGrom (elbow soreness) played catch for the second straight day.

Callaway said Saturday that at this point, the ace may not get an MRI exam, unless the team doctors decide it is necessary when they evaluate him on Monday in New York.

Robinson Cano has now homered against 29 different teams after taking Hudson deep in the fifth inning. The only team left is the Giants.
