Yankees threw at me: Diaz

- By DAN MARTIN

There’s been no shortage of anger between the Yankees and Rays lately when it comes to batters being hit by pitches.

You can add Yandy Diaz to the list — although his claim may be a stretch.

The Rays third baseman was drilled on the left wrist by Chance Adams with two outs in the seventh inning of the Yankees 13-5 win on Sunday in The Bronx.

It came after the Yankees took control of the game with a seven-run sixth.

Diaz initially feared his wrist was broken and said afterwards through an interpreter that he thought it was intentional.

“Yeah,” Diaz said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “I don’t know [why]. Maybe because I hit two home runs off them [on May 11].”

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash disagreed.

Asked if he believed Adams threw at Diaz on purpose, Cash said: “No.

Look, it’s a young pitcher. He’s trying to make a pitch.”

Earlier in the game, Chad Green hit Daniel Robertson in the head, but Robertson was able to stay in the game.

“Obviously, it wasn’t intentional,” Robertson said of the second-inning at-bat. “That guy [Green] likes to live away and up and I was setting my sights out there.”

Diaz’s accusation is just the latest bit of bad blood between the AL East opponents.

On Friday, CC Sabathia nearly hit Austin Meadows and could be seen walking off the mound yelling, “I definitely was trying to hit his ass.”

That came after the Yankees were upset when Yonny Chirinos hit Luke Voit and Gary Sanchez last weekend in Tampa Bay.

And then there was Sabathia serving a five-game suspension to begin this season after he plunked Jesus Sucre last September in retaliation for the Rays’ Andrew Kittredge having thrown behind Austin Romine.

Asked if he hoped to get revenge against the Yankees later in the season, Diaz said, “Hopefully.”
