Robinson rejects shots, but embraces Team USA honors

- By MARC BERMAN

LAS VEGAS — Knicks center Mitchell Robinson only blocked two of Zion Williamson’s shots in the Earthquake Game on Friday at Thomas & Mack Center. But that’s probably because Williamson only got through nine minutes before he was shut down for the summer league with knee and back pain.

Robinson didn’t seem all excited about his performance Friday in welcoming the massively hyped 285-pounder who sucked wind during his very short stint.

“I mean, I block shots,’’ Robinson said before scoring 17 points, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking two shots in a 105-100 overtime loss to the Suns on Sunday. “I blocked shots almost the whole season. So it wasn’t really nothing new. It’s a normal thing.”

Did he feel good to introduce the No. 1 pick to what he will face in the NBA? On one of Williamson’s drives, the Duke product went up and was partially blocked by Robinson and Kevin Knox.

“It was,’’ Robinson said. “He’s a good player. He can play. I can say that. But it’s a natural thing, I just block shots.’’

It is unclear if Williamson will join Robinson in early August as part of the U.S. Select Team that scrimmages against the World Cup squad in Las Vegas.

“Very excited,’’ Robinson said of the honor. “I got selected, so I’m grateful for being chosen to be a part of it.”

Knicks PG Dennis Smith Jr., who visited the team’s summer league practice Saturday, said he had an inkling Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were Brooklyn-bound.

“Honestly I wasn’t surprised,’’ Smith said. “Because people in the league talk, anyway. They keep it private. They’re great players, but I like what we have, to be honest with you. I know there are a lot of hecklers out there and talking this that and the third.

“But I like what we have and I’m not really concerned with what’s going on in Brooklyn.”
