HEIRS TO THE THRONE?
Though the chances are slim Mariano Rivera’s record of 652 saves will ever be broken, here are the five active pitchers who have the best shot at the record:
CRAIG KIMBREL
Kimbrel ended his age-30 season well ahead of Rivera’s pace, already having racked up 333 saves, but he missed the first half after holding out for a contract with the Cubs and has posted an ugly 6.75 ERA.
KENLEY JANSEN
Jansen appears to be the most unlikely to pitch the number of seasons needed to break the record, thanks to a heart condition that required surgery. His 3.72 ERA this season is well above his career average (2.30).
AROLDIS CHAPMAN
Chapman continues racking up saves for the Yankees, and if he remains in The Bronx long-term, he should be able to quickly add to his impressive total. Recurring knee problems could threaten his longevity, however.
ROBERTO OSUNA
Osuna is off to the fastest start of any closer in recent history despite a 75-game suspension for domestic abuse last year. He picked up 20 saves as a 20-year-old in 2015 for the Blue Jays, and could have 200-plus saves by the same age Rivera was closing his first game as a 26-year-old in 1996.
EDWIN DIAZ
If his first half with the Mets represented his new normal, it’s going to take DIaz a long while to come close to threatening Rivera. After posting 57 saves — tied for the second-most in a single season — with a 1.96 ERA in 2018, he has posted a 5.20 ERA and blew four saves, though he’s still on track to approach 40 saves ... if he doesn’t lose his job first.
