Jones signs his deal just in time

Daniel Jones will not miss any time on the field at the start of his first NFL training camp.

Jones signed his first NFL contract Monday night, assuring he will practice Tuesday morning with the other rookies at the Giants training facility. The rookies practice for two days before Thursday’s first full-scale session with the veterans.

Jones was the last of the 10 Giants draft picks to come to terms on a deal. Earlier on Monday, third-round pick Oshane Ximines, an outside linebacker from Old Dominion, signed his contract.

There is not much wiggle room in the contracts of the first-round picks. Jones as the No. 6-overall selection is set for a four-year deal worth $25.6 million, with about $16.7 million in guaranteed money, plus a fifth-year option at the discretion of the Giants. The only holdup with these deals usually is about contract off-set language.

A year ago, running back Saquon Barkley as the No. 2 pick in the draft signed his four-year, fully guaranteed $31.2 million deal the day he reported with the other rookies. Unlike Barkley, who was an immediate starter, Jones embarks on his first NFL training camp as a backup to Eli Manning, although the coaching staff does want to see Jones take the strides he needs to take in order to get himself ready to play, in case anything happens to Manning. Jones looked solid in the spring and the Duke product is expected to settle in as the No. 2 quarterback, ahead of returnees Alex Tanney and Kyle Lauletta.

Ximines was selected 95th overall in the 2019 draft after four seasons at Old Dominion. He led the Monarchs in sacks all four years, starting 48 of the 49 games he played there. His 33 sacks, 51.5 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hurries and 11 forced fumbles are all school records.

Ximines’ contract is expected to be worth $3.55 million over four years, including a signing bonus of $833,000.
