Holland sent to Cubs

Derek Holland was acquired by the Cubs on Friday from the Giants for a player to be named, giving the Cubs a new left-handed option out of the bullpen. As part of the trade, San Francisco agreed to send Chicago $1,846,505 to cover all but $425,000 of the $2,271,505 remaining in Holland’s $6.5 million salary this year. The 32-year-old is 2-4 with a 5.90 ERA in seven starts and 24 relief appearance­s this year.

Scherzer’s freak injury

Max Scherzer was diagnosed with a small strain in his back after an MRI exam Friday. The Nationals ace returned from the IL on Thursday, but did not feel right when he woke up.

Miami adds WR Hurns

Receiver Allen Hurns, coming back from a gruesome leg injury, has signed a $3 million, oneyear contract with the Dolphins. Hurns broke his left ankle in the playoffs last season with Dallas. He was released by the Cowboys on Wednesday.

Titans camp injuries

Tennessee running back Derrick Henry and rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown both left practice very early on the first day of the Titans’ training camp.

Coach Mike Vrabel said both Henry and Brown are day to day with the Titans preferring to err on the side of caution.

IR for Falcons’ Bennett

Atlanta placed defensive tackle Michael Bennett on injured reserve Bennett suffered a broken ankle on Monday’s opening day of training camp.

Anthony, a former firstround pick by New Orleans, had five tackles as a backup for Miami in 2018. Brown has spent time on practice squads for Carolina and Atlanta.

Pens trade for Marino

Pittsburgh acquired Harvard defenseman John

Marino from the Oilers for a conditiona­l draft pick.

The Oilers will receive Pittsburgh’s 2021 sixthround draft choice if Marino signs with the Penguins, or if the team trades his rights.
