Montgomery’s versatility a big hit with Gase

Running back Ty Montgomery continues to be one of the most impressive players in Jets training camp.

The former Pack er and Raven has shown his versatility and looks like he could be a significant piece of Adam Gase’s offense. Montgomery can run the ball and, as a former receiver, is a natural pass catcher out of the backfield.

Gase said the Jets were surprised they could even get him when they signed him in April.

“It was a surprising deal when he came in here,” Gase said. “I was surprised he wasn’t signed yet. The fact that we had a shot at him coming here and when we got him signed, the wheels started turning on offense as far as, ‘All right, what are we going to do? How are we going to use these guys? What’s it going to look like?’ So, we’ re experimenting with all that stuff and his versatility and his flexibility and his knowledge and he’s extremely smart. So, we put a lot on hi s plate and he’s able to play a lot of different roles for us.”

Peyton Manning has had an influence on one aspect of how the Jets practice in training camp. Traditionally, quarterbacks wear red jerseys to signify they are not supposed to be touched by defenders. The Jets, however, have their quarterbacks in regular green jerseys.

Gase said he has done it that way since working with Manning in Denver.

“It was something that started in Denver,” Gase said. “Peyton, he was like, ‘Why are we wearing different jerseys? The guys know not to hit us,’ and it just stayed that way.”

The Jets claimed safety God win Ig we bu ike off waivers from the Eagles, who cut him Friday. They waived CB Jeremy Clark to clear the ros teer rs pot. Clark was a sixth-round pick in 2017 bby the Jets. Of the nine players the Jets drafted that year, only four remain on the roster.

The Jets also signed TE Nick Treusdell and waived guard Tyler Jones. Trues dell most recently played in the Alliance of American Football.
