Dad: Gleyber OK after ‘core’ injury scare

Gleyber Torres has escaped the injury epidemic that is the 2019 Yankees, staying healthy while almost everyone around him has come down with one malady or another.

And while he had to leave Sunday night’s 7-4 victory over the Red Sox in the eighth inning, it seems his luck has yet to run out. The star infielder suffered what manager Aaron Boone called a “core issue” and underwent tests at a hospital. But his father, Eusebio Torres, tweeted his son was fine and was headed to Baltimore with the team.

After the game, Boone said he was unsure how serious the injury was or how Torres sustained it. He went 0-for-3 while playing second base, before coming out after the seventh inning and being replaced by DJ LeMahieu.

Already without key everyday players Aaron Hicks, Luke Voit, Gary Sanchez, Edwin Encarnacion and Giancarlo Stanton, losing the 22-year-old Torres for any length of time would be a major blow. When asked his level of concern, Boone said he wasn’t sure.

“He’s there now getting some tests, so we’ll have an idea hopefully [soon],” the manager said.

Torres hit leadoff for the first time in his career as the Yankees completed a four-game sweep of the Red Sox. He notched his fifth multi-homer game of the season in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader and is having a terrific season, slashing .286/.353/.514 along with a .867 OPS and 23 home runs.

“‘GT’ is a tough kid. He’ll be good,” Aaron Judge said. “Hope he shows up for Baltimore. He likes to hit in Camden Yards.”
