Trump defends ‘Clinton’ retweet
President Trump on Tuesday said he wants a “full investigation” into Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide while defending retweeting a conspiracy theory that former President Bill Clinton was involved in the high-profile pedophile’s death.
“The retweet — which is what it was, it was a retweet — was somebody that is a very respected conservative pundit. So I think it was fine,” the president told reporters at the Morristown, NJ, airport before traveling to Pennsylvania for a speech.
Asked whether the Clintons played a role, Trump said, “I have no idea.”
But then he said Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean “was not a good place” and questioned, “Did Bill Clinton go to the island?”
The former president flew on Epstein’s private plane, but a Clinton spokesperson has denied Clinton ever traveled to Little St. James Island.
Trump was also known to frequent the same social circles as Epstein and a recently resurfaced video showed the two of them at Trump’s Florida resort Mar-a-Lago in 1992.
The president brushed off whether it was appropriate to spread a conspiracy theory and referred to Attorney General William Barr’s probe into Epstein’s death.
“Basically what we’re saying is we want an investigation. I want a full investigation, and that’s what I absolutely am demanding,” he said.
Following Epstein’s death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on Saturday, Trump retweeted a posting from Terrence K. Williams that asked “Death of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH? Yeah right! How does that happen.”
It continued: “#JefferyEpstein had information on Bill Clinton & now he’s dead I see #TrumpBodyCount trending but we know who did this! RT if you’re not Surprised.”
Epstein was being held while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
