Pols split by O’Neill’s ax

The firing of Officer Daniel Pantaleo on Monday drove a wedge between city lawmakers — with Republicans slamming the decision and Mayor de Blasio and fellow Democrats applauding the move.

On Staten Island — where Eric Garner died in 2014 during an arrest by Pantaleo — GOP lawmakers backed the axed cop.

“I am disheartened by Police Commissioner [James] O’Neill’s decision today to fire Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo,” Assemblyman Michael Reilly said in a statement.

“Mayor de Blasio and others will claim that justice was served — this is not justice,” he added.

Councilman Joe Borelli, a Republican representing Staten Island’s South Shore, said the decision was politicized.

“It is tough to see this decision outside of the politics surrounding it, because if you listened to the commissioner, he made an excellent case in justifying Pantaleo’s actions,” he told The Post.

De Blasio, meanwhile, commended the decision to oust Pantaleo.

“There was a fair and impartial process, and justice was done,” he said at a City Hall press conference about an hour after O’Neill announced his decision.

“I hope it brings some small measure of closure and peace to the Garner family,” de Blasio added.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams also applauded the decision.

“After five years of waiting, five years of pain, five years of justice delayed and denied, we have some action, providing a small semblance of justice deserved,” he said.
