Life in de Blasio’s New York: A Descent Into Lawlessness
THE ISSUE: Three NYPD officers who were injured in an attack on police at a Brooklyn housing project.
On Saturday night, a rowdy crowd at a barbecue at a Brooklyn housing project attacked the NYPD by throwing debris and firing shots (“Cops rip Blas,” Aug. 19).
This is disgraceful. Our police officers are under siege when responding to crimes in progress, and then people wonder why so many of them are committing suicide.
Much of the problem is due to Mayor de Blasio, whose failure to support them is a crime in itself. What does it take for the mayor’s office to wake up? A full-scale riot throughout the city? Letting law-breakers run the streets to do as they please? That’s where we could be headed. Joseph Comperchio Brooklyn
The blatant disrespect of police in any given community will lead to more harm for those who live there.
It is a trend, and it’s promulgated by the last several years of nonsupport by the mayor. The bad guys know where his sympathies lie, and it’s not with the police.
Police are functioning in the response mode only. There is no proactive policing to speak of for fear of retaliation. Phil Serpico Queens
It’s very simple: Bill de Blasio has to go. Not only is he a horrible mayor, but he is also a horrible person.
The de Blasios’ total lack of respect for the New York City Police Department is clearly the catalyst for the recent attacks on police officers. Robert Dickstein Paramus, NJ
The Democrats are trying to do away with the rule of law. Too few have condemned the treatment of police lately.
The next outcome could be cops getting killed. Would Democrats speak up then?
The disrespect toward police, I believe, is leading to some of the suicides among police officers. Patrick Hoban Patchogue
Anarchy has hit the streets of New York. Our heroes in uniform can’t properly do their job anymore. Respect for authority is gone here and throughout the country.
Police recruitment is down, and understandably so. When the police turn their backs on the mayor, who warned his son about the police, you know respect is gone.
Buckets of water is the least of it. Police walk away instead of making an arrest. It’s time for another Rudy Giuliani. JR Cummings Manhattan
Policing in the projects when cops are being handcuffed by de Blasio is suicide duty.
Mayors before de Blasio have allowed the NYPD to do its job, but cop-hater de Blasio has emboldened criminals to attack cops because there are no consequences. Our mayor should punish perpetrators on-site.
We still remember Officers Miosotis Familia, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were gunned down on de Blasio’s watch. Must we add more to the list? Elio Valenti Brooklyn
A message to every NYPD officer, whom I support 100 percent now and forever: Unfortunately, the police work under a moron who believes criminals can attack you anytime and anywhere.
That being said, please continue to work hard and protect the citizens of this city. If you don’t, New York will become Chicago in the blink of an eye. Joe Nugent Staten Island
Indifference gave de Blasio the brass ring of politics because voter turnout was at a historic low when he was elected mayor.
The biggest city in the world is his to govern. So what does he do? He issues anti-cop directives that tie our police officers’ hands. He seems hell-bent on making New York a city where anarchy rules, and cops are sidelined.
Take a look at what de Blasio has done with his crazy policies: Our brave cops, the only line of defense against the bad guys, the only ones who are there for you and me when trouble strikes, are abused and attacked by laughing miscreants.
How dare this wannabe president, who is more absent than present in New York City, tie officers’ hands. How dare he put us at risk. Patricia O’Hanlon The Bronx
