MLB: Sale likely done for season

Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale is receiving treatment for inflammation in his elbow that will shut him down for the rest of the regular season.

Orthopedist James Andrews gave Sale an injection of platelet-rich plasma Monday and said he will be re-evaluated in six weeks.

The treatment could be good news for the ballclub, which feared Sale might need Tommy John surgery. That would likely have cost him all of the 2020 season.

Sale went on the injured list Saturday, four days after facing the Indians. If he does not pitch again this season, he will finish with a 6-11 record and 4.40 ERA — both by far the worst in his career.

Two months after being diagnosed with leukemia, Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco came on to throw an inning in relief Monday night for Double-A Akron against Harrisburg. It was Carrasco’s first appearance in a game since being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in June. He finished the inning with a strikeout.

The 32-year-old is scheduled to pitch again for Akron on Thursday, and he and the Indians will then decide his next step. Carrasco wants to return and help the Indians this season.

In Pittsburgh, Asdrúbal Cabrera hit the last of Washington’s four home runs and drove in five runs, and three relievers combined for 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball as the Nationals thumped the Pirates 13-0.

In St. Petersburg, Fla., Tom Murphy homered twice and drove in four runs, Austin Nola also went deep and had three RBIs, and the Mariners beat the playoff-contending Bay 9-3.

In St. Louis, Dakota Hudson and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Paul De

Jong homered to lead the Cardinals over the Brewers 3-0 in a series opener between NL Central contenders.

ETC.: Isles, Ho-Sang reach 1-year deal

The Islanders agreed to terms with restricted free agent Josh Ho-Sang on a one-year deal.

The 23-year-old forward, a first-round pick by the Isles in 2014, notched eight goals and 43 points at AHL Bridgeport in 2018-19, while skating in 10 games with the big club. Michael Dal Colle also agreed to terms on a two-year deal, while RFA Anthony Beauvillier remains unsigned.

In Denver, rookie quarterback Drew Lock left early in the third quarter with an injury to his right hand in the Broncos’ 24-15 preseason loss against San Francisco.

Two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry announced that he is helping Howard University re-establish a golf program. Curry is providing an undisclosed donation that will allow one of the country’s most prominent historically black universities to launch Division I women’s and men’s teams for the 2020-21 academic year.
