Anderson silenced again by NE ‘D’

Robby Anderson was looking forward to the challenge of going up against one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL on Monday night.

Stephon Gilmore made it a non-contest.

The Patriots’ lockdown corner limited Anderson to just one catch, on eight targets, for 10 yards, part of a miserable night for the Jets in a 33-0 loss at MetLife Stadium.

“It is what it is,” Anderson said. “What can I do about it? Just gotta move forward.”

For his part, Anderson said he believed he got open enough against Gilmore, but cited the pressure Sam Darnold faced upfront for the lack of a connection.

“I wouldn’t really say [he made it tough],” Anderson said. “I think it was more so a lot of pressure. I don’t think [Darnold] was really able to get comfortable back there for us to get that rhythm going.”

Darnold didn’t have much success finding anybody, completing just 11 of 32 passes for 86 yards. Jamison Crowder led the receiving group with four catches for 26 yards while Demaryius Thomas had three catches for 42 yards. The Jets’ longest drive of the night went 57 yards, but 39 of those came from penalties. It still ended in a Darnold interception at the goal line, one of four the quarterback threw.

Just last week, in Darnold’s return from mono, he found Anderson five times (on eight targets) for 125 yards and a touchdown. It was the biggest game of Anderson’s season, but it did not do anything for his momentum going forward.

In Week 3 against the Patriots, Anderson caught only three passes for 11 yards, but it was Luke Falk under center. Having Darnold back hardly made a difference against Bill Belichick’s defense.

Anderson struggling against the Patriots is not anything new. Coming into Monday, Anderson had caught 15 passes for 169 yards and no touchdowns in seven games against the Patriots. The trend only continued in the latest chapter of the AFC East beatdown.

“We didn’t execute,” Andrson said. “We didn’t adapt to the circumstances.”
