Girardi expects to know fate soon
Joe Girardi expects to know during the World Series if he will be managing again next season.
The former Yankees manager, who is a candidate for vacancies with the Mets, Phillies and Cubs, told WFAN on Tuesday he isn’t finished interviewing yet, but believes he is still under consideration for each of the three jobs.
“I have not heard anything from anyone, so I am going to say it’s still three teams,” Girardi told Mike Francesa. “I am not sure, but I haven’t been told a ‘no’ by anybody yet.”
Girardi was scheduled to convene with Mets officials for a second interview Tuesday. He is among the six known candidates on the callback list, which according to sources also includes Carlos Beltran, Eduardo Perez, Luis Rojas, Derek Shelton and Tim Bogar.
The Mets are expected to conduct second interviews through the week. But Girardi has emerged as the front-runner for the Phillies job, according to reports, which could put the Mets on the clock if they want to hire him. Girardi, Buck Showalter and Dusty Baker have all received second interviews with the Phillies.
Girardi wouldn’t say if he has a preference.
“I think they are all good jobs, really good jobs,” Girardi said. “They all have great markets, they all have passionate fans that want to win, they have ownership groups that want to win. So I think they are all good jobs.”
Shelton, the Twins bench coach, was the latest confirmed candidate to the callback list. Of the eight known candidates who received an initial interview, only Padres first base coach Skip Schumaker and Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell aren’t receiving callbacks, sources told The Post’s Joel Sherman.
Bogar, the Nationals first base coach, is scheduled to receive his second interview with Mets officials on Thursday, the first scheduled travel day in the World Series. It’s possible Perez, an ESPN analyst, will interview again Wednesday. But as of Tuesday night, he was in Houston for Game 1 of the World Series.
“I am an optimist,” Perez said. “We’ll see how it goes. A lot of quality people interviewing and I respect the process.”
A source indicated Beltran’s second interview might not come until Friday. It’s unclear if Rojas and Shelton have received their second interviews yet or where they might be slotted. According to a source, team officials remain intrigued by the 38-year-old Rojas, who served as the Mets quality control coach last season, but there are questions whether he is ready yet to become a major league manager.
