Fiz alters lineup to jump-start struggling Randle
An attempt was made to aid a frustrated Julius Randle get more room to operate, but it didn’t work.
Knicks coach David Fizdale yanked center Mitchell Robinson from the starting lineup and inserted perimeter-shooting Bobby Portis for Sunday’s clash with Sacramento at the Garden and it resulted in a bad start and a worse loss in a 113-92 defeat.
Portis was supposed to create space for Randle, but Portis was off — starting the game 0-for-5 and finishing with two points in 20 minutes. Randle is regressing, scoring just eight points for the second straight game and shooting 4 of 13. He had seven rebounds and two assists while committing one turnover.
Asked if the move provided any help, Randle said,
“They’ve been loading up on me the whole year. I got to look at the film honestly. I can’t give you a clear answer now.’’
Analytics had supported the move as the Portis-Randle combo entered the game as a plus-10 when on the court together during the first six games of the season. Fizdale said spacing would be better as the Knicks try to feature Randle, their big-ticket free agent, at the expense of Robinson.
Fizdale said he would have to look over the lineup, but admitted things didn’t jell Sunday. After the Celtics’ loss Friday, a seemingly upset Randle uncharacteristically gave just one-, two-, and three-word answers to reporters’ questions.
Randle has struggled with his new role of being the No. 1 option.
“It’s new,’’ Fizdale said before the game. “He hasn’t seen [teams] running two and three people at him before. It’s just a matter of him learning how to play against those defenses and understanding how to attack them. [We’ll] see if that opens up the floor a little bit for Julius.”
Robinson came off the bench to score 10 points — 4-for-4 from the field — with five rebounds and two blocks. He said he’s not ready to shoot jumpers now with his bad hands.
➤ Second-round pick Ignas Brazdeikis finally made his NBA debut, playing the final 4:11 of garbage time. He went to the basket on his first possession, drawing a foul and making two free throws. He finished with four points after also scoring on a layup and committing a turnover.
