Holy international incident, Batman!

DC Comics pulled a poster of the Caped Crusader from a social-media ad campaign after supporters of the Chinese government said it was a veiled reference to anti-government protesters in Hong Kong, according to a report.

The ad featured an image of the iconic masked character throwing a Molotov cocktail (inset), a homemade grenade made from a gasoline-filled bottle and frequently used by Hong Kong protesters in clashes with police.

Pink letters in the foreground say, “The future is young.”

Many of the protesters in Hong Kong, who are fighting for universal suffrage among other demands, are college age or younger and wear masks during the demonstrations.

The similarities were not lost on mainland Chinese citizens.

“No matter what the reason, to put an image like this up at a sensitive time like this means you have a death wish,” a user on the social-media site Weibo wrote, according to the Daily Beast.

The ad, part of a promotion for DC Comics’ “Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child,” was yanked from the company’s Twitter and Instagram accounts following the backlash.

The removal then prompted criticism from backers of the protesters.

“DC Comics are such cowards for removing a cover for Dark Knight Golden Child, just to appease China. So sick of this,” tweeted user @Ryumoau_Juno.

Pro-democracy demonstrations, now in their sixth month, have become increasingly violent in recent weeks.

At least one person has died and dozens others have been injured in the clashes. Activists throwing Molotov cocktails have been met with a police response of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons.

On Saturday, a cross-generational rally in Hong Kong kicked off a weekend of protests.

Hundreds of senior citizens joined throngs of black-clad students in the Central District to demand an end to police brutality and mass arrests.

“This is not the Hong Kong I know,” said a 71year-old woman who gave her name as Ponn. Carrying her own plastic stool to the rally site, she said: “I want the government to know that we are not happy with what they have done to our generation.”

Violence has ebbed since Tuesday’s municipal elections handed a resounding victory to pro-democracy candidates.
