Social Warriors-in-Training: Beacon’s Batty Protests
The photo of those selfinvolved, undereducated Beacon HS students protesting an alleged overheard comment from a white student complaining that she was waitlisted by a top university while a less-qualified student was admitted says a great deal about Gen Z (“Madness at Beacon HS,” Editorial, Dec. 17).
Beacon Principal Ruth Lacey has chosen to pander to this “Lord of the Flies” group, which is now targeting a fellow student, who simply may have been stating a valid complaint.
The parents of the students attending this prestigious high school should be appalled.

Teachers are supposed to be wiser than those they teach. Instead, we have Demetrius Green, ace science teacher, who feels it is a moral imperative to encourage students to miss school.
He feels it is appropriate to galvanize a hysterical teenage response to another student’s conversation with a counselor.
As a retired teacher, I feel that this is outright manipulation of minors. It blurs the line between teacher and student.
The proper response would have been to discuss the nature of rumors, irresponsible reporting of fact, the student’s report of her conversation and her point of view. Calming down the hordes was in order.

A young lady questioned why she was not accepted to a school of her choice, while a student with less academic achievement was.
I think that’s a sound question for a 17-year-old to ask. But she was chastised and threatened. Good luck, kid, in the age of recalcitrance.

Will the student who disrupted another student’s meeting with a counselor be disciplined?
Will the teacher who apparently aspires to the exalted role of “social-justice warrior” face any consequences for incitement?
In Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza’s education system, where “toxic whiteness” is the overriding issue and concerns about objectivity and color-blind notions of fair play are derided as old-fashioned, racist constructs, the answers to those questions are obvious.
