Jets deliver bath Ward asked for

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

You don’t see many coaches get Gatorade baths after a team’s sixth win of the season, but Jets offensive assistant Hines Ward was doused by wide receivers Braxton Berrios and Robby Anderson after defeating his former team.

Ward, who is in his first season with the Jets, was a star wide receiver with the Steelers for 14 seasons. He told the wide receivers this week that he wanted them to win the game for him and then give him a Gatorade bath. The Jets obliged with a 16-10 win, followed by the sideline celebration.

“I knew that was something special to him,” receiver Jamison Crowder said. “He had mentioned that throughout the week in our receiver meetings that he wanted to beat those guys. He said he wanted a Gatorade bath, so I’m happy for him. I’m happy we got the win.”

JETS NOTES

Ward wrapped head coach Adam Gase up in a bear hug as the game ended.

“We knew it meant a lot to him,” Gase said. “He’s been great all year ever since he’s been here. He’s been very appreciative of the fact that we gave him an opportunity and kept him on staff. He’s done a great job with our guys.”

➤ Safety Jamal Adams returned after missing the past two games with an ankle sprain. He led the team with eight tackles and had two tackles for a loss and one quarterback hit.

“I was battling,” Adams said. “At the end of the day, it’s not about me. It’s about these boys in here. I have so much love for them and just to go out there and compete with my brothers, that’s what it was about for me. Whatever it took for me. It was real and gritty. I was hurting, but I was out there just giving it my all, man, playing ball as best I could.”

Gase credited Adams with raising the team’s play.

“Having Jamal back out there, you felt the energy,” Gase said. “We felt it all week. You heard him talking. You knew he was good to go and that continued today.”

➤ Conor McDermott started at right guard, becoming the 10th different starting offensive lineman the Jets have used this year. It was also their eighth different line combination. … The Jets benched CB

Bless Austin at halftime after he allowed the 28-yard, game-tying touchdown just before the half.
