YOU ROCK, SON
Bruce’s kid an NJ fireman
His glory days are just beginning. New Jersey rock legend Bruce Springsteen’s son Sam is now a full-fledged Jersey City firefighter after being sworn in with 14 other plebes Tuesday by Fire Chief Steven McGill.
And The Boss and Sam’s mom, Patti Scialfa, had front-row seats. “This is really my son’s day,” Bruce told reporters. “I’m just excited to be here.”
Asked if he was worried about the dangers of the job, he added, “You know, I think he can handle himself really well.”
Sam, 26, joined the department as a trainee over the summer, fulfilling a lifelong dream, Scialfa said in an Instagram post at the time.
“You followed your dreams…. JC firefighter… Stay safe .. love your brave heart,” she wrote.
The rock scion wasn’t singled out during the swearing-in ceremony — he was just another one of the guys in uniform.
“A big congratulations to the new firefighters that are joining us,” Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said. “They are joining, pound for pound, the best fire department anywhere in the country.”
The younger Springsteen took the civil-service exam in 2018 and ranked 42nd out of 961 applicants. City officials at the time said 60 of the top applicants would become trainees.
Sam and the other applicants underwent five months of instruction at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy before making the cut and joining the department, nj.com reported.
Sam is the youngest of The Boss’ children with Scialfa — Evan James, 29, is a musician, and Jessica Rae, 28, is an equestrian.
Asked Tuesday if becoming a firefighter was difficult, Sam replied, “It wasn’t easy.”
He served as a volunteer with the Colts Neck Fire Department in January 2014 after graduating from the Monmouth County Fire Academy.
Sam later served in the City of Long Branch Fire Department Co. 5 before signing on with Jersey City’s Bravest.
