Cultivate some cash at Farmers

- By WES REYNOLDS

This week’s field for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego is a deep one, as Rory McIlroy (6/1) and Tiger Woods (10/1) make their 2020 debuts. Jon Rahm, the 2017 tournament champion, is sandwiched in between the two on the odds board at 15/2. San Diego native Xander Schauffele and defending tournament champion Justin Rose, fresh off a runner-up finish in Singapore on the Asian Tour last week, follow in the marketplace at 16/1. Here are some longer shots who have a chance to take home the title:

THE PLAYS Hideki Matsuyama (18/1):

He finished third here last year due to a 73 on Saturday that prevented him from catching eventual winner Rose. If Matsuyama can avoid the bad start, he can surely contend here. Two weeks ago at the Sony Open, he opened with a 74 before logging 67-67-66 over the final 54 holes to place 12th.

Tony Finau (28/1):

Finau has never finished out of the Top 25 at Torrey Pines, including back-toback finishes of fourth and sixth in 2017 and 2018. He was on the first page of last week’s crowded leaderboard before finishing 14th.

Brandt Snedeker (40/1):

Snedeker is not in the best recent form, but other than Tiger Woods, he’s the ultimate horse for the course at Torrey Pines. He has two wins, two runners-up and six top 10s here in the last 10 years.

Joaquin Niemann (45/1):

While he has never won the Farmers, Niemann won twice at Torrey Pines at the IMG Academy Junior World Gold Championships in 2015 and 2016.

Other good buys:

Ryan Palmer (55/1), Cameron Champ (70/1), Tom Hoge (125/1).
