NFL: No new deal for Falcons’ OLB

The Falcons have cut ties with outside linebacker Vic Beasley, who led the NFL in sacks in the team’s run to the Super Bowl but didn’t come close to matching that production over the last three seasons. The decision announced Monday means the 27-year-old Beasley, the No. 8 overall pick out of Clemson in 2015, will become an unrestrict­ed free agent when the new league year begins March 18.

Willie Wood, the Hall of Fame defensive back who won five NFL championsh­ips with the Packers under coach Vince Lombardi, died Monday. He was 83. Wood died of natural causes and had suffered from advanced dementia for several years. NBA: Butler, Heat overwhelm 76ers

Jimmy Butler scored a season-high 38 points against his former team before getting the fourth quarter off, and the Heat ran away in the second half to beat the 76ers 137-106 in Miami.

In Atlanta, Jayson Tatum scored 28 points, leading the Celtics to a 123-115 victory over the Hawks. Trae Young led Atlanta with 34 points, his 25th game with at least 30 points this season. Kevin Huerter had 23 points, including five 3-pointers.

In Los Angeles, Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and Paul George hit a step-back go-ahead jumper with 13.7 seconds remaining to lift the Clippers to a 108-105 win over the Spurs.

MLB: Mariners ink lefty Gonzales

The Mariners signed left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales to a $30 million, fouryear contract that includes a club option for the 2025 season. Gonzales is about to begin his third full season with the Mariners after arriving in 2017 via trade from St. Louis.

Jhoulys Chacín finalized a minor league contract with the Twins after a miserable 2019 season that saw him go from an Opening Day start to an August release by the Brewers.

ETC.: SHU’s McKnight day to day

Seton Hall starting point guard Quincy McKnight is being listed as day to day with an injury to his left knee. The 12thranked Pirates announced that an MRI exam on the knee was negative.

New Jersey sportsbook­s handled nearly $54.3 million on Super Bowl LIV, topping last year’s $34.89 million. Sportsbook­s lost $4.28 million (-7.8 percent hold) after losing $4.57 million last year. — Dave Tuley

The Red Bulls have hired Kevin Thelwell from Wolverhamp­ton as head of sport under general manager Marc de Grandpre. Thelwell, 46, will have oversight on all aspects of the sporting side of the club.

In Toronto, Mark Pysyk scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the Panthers beat the Maple Leafs 5-3.

In Boston, Wilmer Skoog scored 7:20 into the second overtime and Boston University rallied past No. 4 Boston College 5-4 in the nightcap at Monday’s Beanpot opening round. The Terriers (11-8-6) will face two-time defending champion Northeaste­rn, which beat Harvard 3-1 earlier in the night, in the final at TD Garden next Monday. BU will be looking for its 31st Beanpot, most in the tourney’s 68-year history.
