Montgomery will be ready for any opening

TAMPA — Jordan Montgomery isn’t sure where he’ll fit into the Yankees’ plans this season, because they are set to enter spring training with five starters.

But the 2 7- ye a r - o l d , who returned from Tommy John surgery in September, knows if he stays healthy, he’ll likely have a role in The Bronx at some point.

“Things always happen, so the more arms you have, the better,’’ Montgomery said Monday at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “I’ve got to be ready.”

Montgomery went 9-7 with a 5.88 ERA in 2017, but made just two starts in 2018 before needing surgery and just two appearances last September.

Another arm that could factor into their rotational depth is Clarke Schmidt, the Yankees’ 2017 first-round pick, who spent time at three levels last season, reaching Double-A Trenton, where he had a 2.37 ERA in 19 innings over three starts. It will be Schmidt’s first time in major league camp.

Schmidt was among the 19 nonroster players invited to spring training on Monday.

Domingo Acevedo was also invited, as well as several other right-handers with major league experience: Dan Otero, Nick Tropeano and David Hale. Left-handers Luis Avilan and Tyler Lyons also got invites.

Otero, who turns 35 this month, spent the last four seasons with Cleveland, while Avilan and Tropeano have also both spent extensive time in the majors and will compete for spots in the bullpen.

The Yankees also off icially signed catchers Josh Thole, Chris Iannetta, Erik Kratz, Kellin Deglan and Wynston Sawyer.

Former Minnesota outfielder Zack Granite will also be in camp, as will INF/OF Rosell Herrera. Prospects Trey Amburgey and Kyle Holder will also be in camp, in addition to INF Chris Gittens and RHP Alexander Vizcaino.

The Yankees announced they will open two new “social gathering locations” at Yankee Stadium this season on the 200 main level. The sections, one in left field and the other in right, will be accessible to all fans with tickets anywhere in the Stadium.
