Warren is Dems’ top pick for veep

- Steven Nelson

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is the heavy favorite among Democrats to be Joe Biden’s running mate, a poll has found.

The Data for Progress survey shows 31 percent of likely Democratic voters want the former vice president to pick the Massachusetts senator.

Other potential contenders lagged far behind. Sen. Kamala Harris of California was preferred by 18 percent of respondents. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams each had 10 percent support.

Biden has pledged to pick a woman to join his ticket, and the poll did not ask respondents about any male options.

The other women offered as choices — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada — had support in the low single digits.

Asked which veep contender was most “ready” to be president, Warren led with 42 percent, trailed by Harris at 15 percent, Klobuchar at 9 percent and Abrams at 7 percent.

Data for Progress polled 605 likely Democratic voters on April 26 for the survey and provided the results to Vox. The poll has a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.

Warren, who dropped out of the race in March, endorsed Biden last month, becoming one of the last 2020 Democratic candidates to back his campaign.

Her decision not to endorse fellow progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders has been seen as having contributed to his defeat by Biden. President Trump has tried to pin Sanders’ loss on Warren to win disaffected Sanders backers.
