Dunbar lawyer denies charges

The armed robbery and aggravated assault case against Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker has taken a strange turn. The other player facing charges, Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar, is innocent and has sworn affidavits from witnesses to prove it, his attorney said.

The two NFL players are facing arrest warrants by police in Miramar, Fla., on allegations they robbed people of jewelry and money at a party Wednesday night. Neither player had turned himself in as of Friday evening. Baker, according to the police report, is the ring-leader, having allegedly told two accomplices — one of them Dunbar — to rob people as he held a semi-automatic weapon. In the report, Dunbar was said to be helping Baker. Lawyer Michael Grieco, however, said he has affidavits from five witnesses who say Dunbar was not involved.

“All of the affidavits indicate my client is innocent,” Greico said, according to the Miami Herald. “I have never in my career seen a police department so excited about arresting a celebrity.”

“I can’t believe Miramar PD did a virtual touchdown dance without investigating further,” the lawyer told Miami sports talk show host Andy Slater.

Baker, the Giants’ first-round pick a year ago, is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault. Dunbar is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm. He allegedly lost $70,000 gambling earlier in the week before they and a masked accomplice stole $12,000 in cash and an estimated $61,000 in watches at gunpoint during another party with more gambling, witnesses said in a prior police affidavit.
