Ex-Nets exec joins Knicks’ front office

Leon Rose’s latest addition likely would have earned Kobe Bryant’s approval.

One day after the new Knicks president brought aboard longtime Jazz executive Walt Perrin as assistant general manager in charge of college scouting, Rose continued his front office makeover by adding former Nets assistant general manager Frank Zanin, who will have the same title with the Knicks, focusing on pro personnel.

Zanin, who has spent the past four seasons as an advance scout for the Thunder, was endorsed by Bryant for the Nets’ GM job in 2016. Zanin and Bryant first became acquainted playing basketball in the Philadelphia-area, where Zanin’s career began as a scout for the 76ers.

Zanin spent nine years with the 76ers, also working as a video coordinator and assistant coach. He then spent four seasons with the Nets, where he served as a pro personnel scout and director of player procurement.

“Hope to see you in the GM seat,” the late Lakers legend tweeted about Zanin four years ago, when Brooklyn’s position became vacant. “You have a great basketball mind and it’s time you get your shot.”

In addition to Zanin and Perrin, Rose — the former power agent who officially joined the Knicks on March 2 — also recently hired former Cavaliers executive Brock Aller as a chief strategist with expertise in the salary cap.

Though the Knicks decided to retain GM Scott Perry on a one-year deal, the status of assistant GM Gerald Madkins and director of player personnel Harold Ellis — whose contracts expire in August — are uncertain.
