NFL: 49ers player positive for COVID-19

An unidentifi­ed 49ers player has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 after an informal workout with teammates in Tennessee. NFL Network reported Friday that one player who took part in the workouts this week in Nashville has tested positive. All the players who were there will now get tested to see if there is any spread.

49ers receiver Richie James Jr. broke his right wrist during offseason workouts and won’t be ready to return until after the start of training camp. James is expected to miss at least two months, according to NFL Network. ETC.: 23 Clemson football players test positive

Clemson said 23 football players have tested positive for coronaviru­s since returning to campus this month. The South Carolina school did not identify the athletes.

In all, 28 people were found with COVID-19 since testing began for athletes and other personnel on June 8.

The Astros have signed second baseman J.C. Correa, the brother of star shortstop Carlos Correa. The Astros signed the younger Correa for $20,000, the maximum allowed for an undrafted free agent.

Correa hit .245 in 14 games as a senior for Lamar University this year before the season was shortened by coronaviru­s.

The NCAA expanded its policy banning states with prominent Confederat­e symbols from hosting its sponsored events, one day after the SEC made a similar declaratio­n aimed at the Mississipp­i state flag. Five years ago, the NCAA took a stand for LGBTQ rights, invoking a similar ban on predetermi­ned sites for its events in states that passed laws aimed at limiting protection­s for people in those communitie­s.

Maple Leafs All-Star center Auston Matthews has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Toronto Sun. Matthews, 22, is self-quarantini­ng at his home in Arizona and hopes to be healthy enough and eligible to travel to Toronto in time for the opening of Leafs camp on July 10.

In London, Paul Pogba made an immediate impact on his return from surgery, earning a penalty converted by Bruno Fernandes that earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw at Tottenham in the English Premier League.
