Off-duty officer in Bronx shootout

- Tina Moore and Amanda Woods

If it’s not the fireworks keeping New Yorkers up at night, it’s probably the gunfire.

An off-duty NYPD cop exchanged rounds with a group of apparent gangbangers early Tuesday in The Bronx, another flare-up in the city’s recent spate of gun violence, authorities and police sources said.

The officer, who was not in uniform, was walking near Jennings Street and Longfellow Avenue at around 1 a.m. when he was confronted by a group of five or six men, according to police.

The group threw gang signs, and one of the punks — masked and riding a bike — pulled out a gun and squeezed off multiple rounds at the cop, leading the lawman to return fire, authorities said.

No one was struck, but the officer was taken to Saint Barnabas Medical Center to be checked out.

The group took off and no arrests have been made.

That run-in wasn’t even among the 11 shooting incidents that left a total of 17 people wounded citywide on Monday, adding to June gunplay figures that are the highest the city has seen since 1996.

Among Monday night’s carnage was a shooting at a candlelight vigil in Brooklyn, where five people were hit, according to cops.

Three women and two men, ranging in age from 24 to 39, were wounded when lead started flying at Sterling Street near Brooklyn Avenue at around 11 p.m., authorities said, noting that all five are expected to survive.

The victims had been attending the vigil. It was unclear what it was for, or how the violence began, according to cops.

Elsewhere that night, a man was shot on Morrison Avenue near East 172nd Street in The Bronx at around 8:40 p.m., suffering nonlife-threatening injuries, according to police.

On Staten Island, a 28-year-old man was shot multiple times in the back and stomach on Jersey Street near Layton Avenue at around 11:40 p.m., cops said.

He’s listed in stable condition at Richmond University Medical Center.
