Jail officers boot acting union boss

- Carl Campanile

The acting boss of the city correction-officers union has been voted out in the group’s first election since its former longtime leader, Norman Seabrook, was convicted of corruption.

Members of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association elected Benny Boscio as their president in a landslide — a repudiation of acting President Elias Husamudeen, who came in third in the vote.

Boscio, a correction officer since 1999, netted 2,087 votes, while Albert Craig got 971 and Husamudeen 815, according to the American Arbitration Association, which tallied the results on Saturday.

Husamudeen was vice president when he took over as COBA’s interim president in 2016 after Seabrook, who was president for 21 years, was convicted of accepting a $60,000 bribe in return for investing $20 million of the union’s money in a hedge fund.

Boscio celebrated the victory on Facebook.

“WE WON! On behalf of the ENTIRE Boldest United Team, we are THANKFUL & GRATEFUL for the TREMENDOUS support of our Brother & Sister Officers,” he wrote in a post.

Boscio said he was committed to ensuring correction officers’ safety, protecting jobs, reducing needless discipline, boosting benefits and improving transparency with union affairs.

He’ll face big challenges. Mayor de Blasio and the City Council have approved a plan to phase out jails on Rikers Island and replace them with four smaller lockups.

And Boscio may also have to confront layoffs as the economy suffers during the coronavirus pandemic.
