New York stable but cautious

New York City and state have hit record lows for coronavirus hospitalizations, new figures show.

There were 637 people hospitalized with the contagion statewide Saturday, the lowest daily total in months, Gov. Cuomo said Sunday.

“That’s a new low for us since March 18, so really great news,” the governor told reporters in a conference call.

The city recorded four hospitalizations Friday, the latest data available — tying its previous low on March 1.

Cuomo crowed that the state is holding steady with a 1 percent positive-test rate.

“New York did 53,568 tests [Saturday]. 536 positive. That is 1 percent, on the head, positive,” the governor said. But there’s a but, Cuomo said. “What’s the but? The but is the constant caution of this virus,’’ he continued. “Don’t get cocky, don’t get arrogant. There are still threats out there. You still have the national threat, and you have the compliance challenge.’’

City bars were slapped with dozens of social-distancing violations over the weekend for showing a “blatant disregard’’ for the rules, Cuomo said.

The enforcement blitz by State Liquor Authority agents — which resulted in 105 violations being handed out Friday and Saturday — came about because establishments are continuing to flout safety regulations, the governor said.

Violations include “people outside of bars gathering and drinking, which is illegal,’’ he continued.

“Inside the establishment, employees [are] not wearing masks” as required, either, Cuomo warned.
