Cuomo’s Ugly Downplay Of His Nursing-Home Fiasco

-

New York now has its own version of “Laurel and Hardy” — Gov. Cuomo and Health Commissioner Howard Zucker (“Grim undercount,” Aug. 12).

Cuomo and Zucker continue to downplay the number of senior deaths that occurred in nursing homes as a result of their negligence and incompetency.

The most glaring omission is that their totals do not include those seniors who contracted COVID-19 in the nursing homes, were moved to hospitals and died there. Some experts have theorized that their totals would probably double if the hospital deaths were included.

A private investigation must be conducted, and these two idiots must be held accountable. Ed Quinlan New Hyde Park

Why is anyone surprised by the dishonest denials from our governor and his cohort-incoverup, Zucker?

Through simple repetition, they believe their lies will carry the day and we will forget by the next news cycle. The fact that Zucker just repeats Cuomo’s lies speaks volumes about his character.

The governor now expects us to forget his support of Zucker, who had access to thousands of empty beds at the Javits Center and the hospital ship moored at New York City, which would have mitigated many deaths. Unnecessary deaths? That’s just politics. Emanuel Gross Manhattan

All attempts to further examine the cause of nursing-home deaths of seniors have been stonewalled by Cuomo and Zucker. And the state hearings were vacuous.

The governor will not yield to an independent investigation even when both sides are calling for one. In this case, there is no better raison d’être for the Fourth Estate to pick up the ball.

When the highestranking executive of the state closes the door on further probing of possible misfeasance, this is exactly where journalists come into play. This is not a dictatorship. Phil Serpico Queens

If Cuomo truly believes he didn’t do anything wrong in sending COVID patients to nursing homes, then why is he doing everything he can to block an independent investigation?

After all, if he’s truly blameless, then why not let the facts vindicate him? The facts are, however, that his callous, shameful decision sentenced well over 6,000 of our cherished elderly to die horrible deaths, frightened and isolated from their loved ones. Cuomo’s arrogance and dishonesty is despicable. Robert DiNardo Farmingdale

Why isn’t there a classaction lawsuit against Cuomo and the state of

New York for the deaths of the patients in the nursing homes?

The nursing homes didn’t demand or create a law that patients with COVID be placed in their facilities. They had no choice.

He gave a snarky answer when asked by a reporter during one of his tedious pressers, implying that the homes held onto their residents who were ill because if they didn’t, they would “no longer get paid.”

Cuomo also threatened their licenses, stating, “They have to do the job they’re paid to do, and if they’re not, they’re violating state regulations.” So why sue nursing homes?

I know who killed my aunt, and it wasn’t Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Nursing Home in Staten Island. Where are the lawyers? Susan Kerr Stony Brook

Cuomo continues to claim that any call for an investigation is strictly partisan. However, Democratic members of the Legislature and City Council called for an independent investigation. That’s not partisan.

And where are Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand? If I were a senator, I would want to know how more than 6,000 of my constituents died.

You can bet the ranch house if this happened under a Republican governor, you would not be able to drag either one away from a television camera.

It’s time for an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this fiasco, so it can never happen again. L. Schaefer Wantagh
