MLB: Oh, baby! Bieber strikes out 11 in Tribe ‘W’

Unbeaten Shane Bieber racked up 11 more strikeouts and the Indians blanked the Pirates 2-0 on Thursday night in Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep and extend their winning streak to a season-high six games.

Eric Hosmer hit a historic shot that made San Diego the first team in the majors to launch grand slams in four straight games, and the Padres needed an unearned run in the 10th inning for a wild, 8-7 win over the visiting Rangers.

In Seattle, Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings, Cody Bellinger homered for the second straight game and the Dodgers beat the Mariners 6-1.

ETC.: Washington coach Rivera has cancer

Washington Football coach Ron Rivera has been diagnosed with a form of skin cancer, according to a team spokesman.

The spokesman confirmed that Rivera, 58, has squamous cell carcinoma. ESPN first reported Rivera’s diagnosis, saying it was lymph node cancer and later clarified it was squamous cell carcinoma in his neck.

In Edmonton, Alberta, Denis Gurinov scored four goals, including a hat trick in the second period when also assisting on the go-ahead score, as the Stars rallied from a quick three-goal deficit for a 7-3 win over the Flames to win their first-round playoff series in six games.

After finishing with a 7-under 64 in the first round of The Northern Trust Open in Norton, Mass., Harris English shared the lead with Kevin Streelman, Cameron Davis and Russell Henley. Tiger Woods opened with a 68 with five birdies over his last 10 holes.

Jazmine Jones led the Liberty (1-11) with 18 points.
