Democrats to the Rescue

- hopes

City and state officials seem bent on wrecking New York via lockdowns, soaring crime and tax hikes. Cheers to the new group coming to the rescue — by fighting new taxes and aiding businesses.

Notably, the Campaign for New York’s Future includes several key Democrats, like exGov. David Paterson and former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., who played a key role saving the city in the ’90s.

They all know what’s at stake: If officials “just pile up taxes,” Paterson rightly warns, the rich are “just going to get up and leave.” Instead, New York needs “bold policies that keep healthy businesses here and help struggling businesses rebuild.”

Gov. Cuomo’s budget czar, Robert Mujica, notes that rich folks are the most mobile, and many have fled during COVID. If they make it permanent, the tax base withers.

Yet Democrats in Albany are eyeing tax hikes that will push them out, and Mayor de Blasio practically the rich will leave. “Kick rocks, billionaires,” his spokesman sniped. Mayors shouldn’t be “too cozy” with businesses, warns de Blasio, insanely.

Which is why it’s good news that the new group, to be funded largely by donors from the hospitality and financial industries, will spend millions on lobbying to “preserve” New York’s tax base and also “expand it.”

“A small share of taxpayers fund the lion’s share” of revenue, its Web site says. “To ensure a strong future, we must retain those taxpayers” and broaden the “tax base, so we are less dependent on them.” Smart.

The campaign will also push steps to aid restaurants, tourism and small businesses as well as other measures. Too bad for de Blasio: They may save the city despite him.
