Upstate gun mayhem

A shooting at a wild house party in Rochester early Saturday left two teenagers dead and 14 other victims injured in what police are calling “a tragedy of epic proportions.”

Shots broke out just before 12:30 a.m. in a backyard less than two miles from downtown, according to police. Arriving cops found some 100 young people running around — some fleeing, others dashing toward the house (above).

“So many people going in so many directions, so many different ways, driving on the grass, trying to get out of here,” said Billy, a witness interviewed at the scene by ABC 13.

The two who died were recent high school grads Jaquayla Young and state track champion Jarvis Alexander, both 19, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported. Neither was an intended shooting target, authorities said.

None of the wounded victims — 17 to 23 years old — suffered life-threatening injuries, officials said.

“We have innocent victims that were attending a party with a few friends and unfortunately they lost their lives as a result,” said local police Capt. Frank Umbrino.

No suspects have been taken into custody.

Officials said the shooting happened after a small invitation-only party was infiltrated by people from two other house parties.

Handguns were pulled as the rival groups argued.

Neighbors Jasmin Lopez and John Santiago woke up to the sound of gunshots and found two teens in their driveway.

“You could see the fear in his eyes,” Santiago told the Democrat & Chronicle of one. “He was scared.”

“There were kids throwing up, hiding between bushes, bleeding,” Lopez said.

Police don’t think the shooting was tied to Rochester anti-police-brutality protests since the fatal arrest there of Daniel Prude.
