Coach blames execution, not his play-calling

Adam Gase stood behind his play-calling a day after the Jets’ 31-13 loss to the 49ers, instead lamenting a lack of execution.

Late in the second quarter, the Jets faced a fourthand-1 from the San Francisco 20-yard line. Gase called for a handoff to Josh Adams, who was stuffed in the backfield as the Jets turned the ball over on downs.

Gase said Sam Darnold did not have the option to audible to a quarterback sneak on that specific play.

“It’s my call,” Gase said. “If we execute the play, we’ve got the first down. We didn’t execute it.”

Gase also defended the decision to limit Darnold to mostly short passes early on, pointing to the 49ers defense not allowing much over their head.

“It was our game plan going in that we wanted to make sure that we attacked to keep it third-and-manageable,” Gase said. “We had shots that we were going to run later in the game . ... Unfortunately, once that happened, the guy that is able to stretch the field for us [Breshad Perriman] was out of the game.”

³ Perriman sprained his ankle in the second quarter and “may miss a game, or possibly two,” Gase said. It’s the latest blow to the Jets’ wide receiver corps, which is already missing Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and Denzel Mims (hamstring). Gase said it was too early to tell whether Crowder might be available Sunday against the Colts.

Center Connor McGovern also has a hamstring strain and is week-to-week.

If McGovern is unable to go, Josh Andrews will likely start for him.

CB Quincy Wilson is in the concussion protocol and CB Arthur Maulet has a groin strain.

³ Newly signed inside linebacker Alec Ogletree got the start Sunday and played 34 of 61 snaps — including being out of position on Raheem Mostert’s 80-yard touchdown run — while Avery Williamson played just 17 snaps. Williamson is coming off a hamstring injury after missing all of last year with an ACL tear, so Gase said the plan was for the two linebackers to split time.

“Now we’re trying to ramp him back up,” he said. “We’re just trying to make sure we don’t have any setbacks with him with any other kind of injuries.”

³The Colts will be without S Malik Hooker (torn Achilles) and WR Parris Campbell (MCL and PCL injury).
