Federal charges are still possible
Even though a Kentucky grand jury declined to indict three cops in the death of Breonna Taylor, federal charges could still be in play.
“As we have indicated, our investigation is focusing on all aspects of Breonna Taylor’s death,” an FBI spokesperson said Thursday.
“Once our investigation is concluded, we will provide the collected facts to the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to determine if federal criminal charges are warranted.”
A DOJ representative echoed the sentiment.
“The FBI continues its federal investigation into all aspects of the death of Breonna Taylor (pictured),” a department statement read. “This work will continue beyond the state charges announced today.”
Meanwhile Thursday, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said that Kentucky officials are working to make public more information about the investigation without jeopardizing the still unfolding probes.
“What we’re doing is working with the attorney general and . . . the FBI to understand what we can release so it doesn’t interfere with any of the ongoing investigations,” Fischer said during a morning press briefing.
“What we want to do is get as much of this information out as soon as we can.”
Added Fischer, “There does need to be some redaction of names to protect individuals’ identities in some of these cases. That process has started, and we hope to be able to announce further information on that soon.”
