Healthy Perine gives Gase RB options

- By GREG JOYCE

La’Mical Perine practiced fully Thursday for the first time this season, just in time to take on more responsibility Sunday against the Colts.

The Jets rookie running back made his NFL debut Sunday against the 49ers with three carries for 17 yards and could be in line for more snaps this weekend in Indianapolis, further removed from the ankle injury he suffered in training camp.

“We’re hoping to kind of really spread the workload out a little more to where we can make sure we do a good job of getting Frank [Gore] through an entire game instead of kind of really burning him out in the first half,” coach Adam Gase said Thursday. “So I feel good about the rotation that we’re talking about going through, and it’s just all about if we can keep everybody available for the whole game. That’s really what we want.”

In their first game without the injured Le’Veon Bell, the Jets leaned heavily on Gore. The veteran took 37 of 65 snaps and rushed 21 times for 63 yards. Perine got nine snaps, Kalen Ballage eight and Josh Adams five.

Defensive captain Marcus Maye said he talked to Bradley McDougald and Avery Williamson regarding their recent comments about the Jets’ sluggish practices.

“I think it was a little misunderstanding, because we definitely practice hard,” Maye said. “That’s one thing we do. Obviously there are some things we can always correct, some things we can always do better. But for the most part, I think we do a great job of coming out every day, trying to get better and working on our craft.”

Aside from the Jets’ offensive injuries, CB Quincy Wilson (concussion) and S Ashtyn Davis (groin) also missed Thursday’s practice.
