Struggling offense will be down 3 more starters
The signs weren’t encouraging all week, but Jets coach Adam Gase confirmed wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman and right tackle George Fant will not play Sunday in Indianapolis.
”Yeah, they’re not going to be able to go,” Gase said when asked about the two wideouts before practice Friday. “And [with Fant] getting a concussion on Wednesday, he wouldn’t be able to clear the protocol [in time to play against the Colts].”
Gase added that neither Crowder (hamstring) nor Perriman (ankle) presently is considered a candidate for injured reserve. Braxton Berrios, one of three remaining receivers on the active roster, also has been listed as questionable after being limited in practice Friday with a hamstring issue.
Center Connor McGovern (hamstring) also was limited in practice Friday and remains questionable to play, but Gase said, “We’ll see how he feels if he’s able to even be available in a backup role, that’s helpful for us, even in an emergency situation.”
Defensive backs Quincy Wilson (concussion) and Ashtyn Davis (groin) also have been ruled out.
➤ Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco (neck) has practiced fully all week, but Gase still hasn’t officially committed to the Super Bowl-winning former Raven as Sam Darnold’s backup against the Colts.
➤ Gase will continue to wear a mask on the sidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, after multiple coaches and teams were heavily fined for not doing so in the first two weeks.
“There was a suggestion by our starting quarterback [Darnold] that maybe I needed to pull it down sometimes when I was calling plays, and I’m glad I didn’t,” Gase said. “That was something in the first game, I was just like, ‘Hey, just tell me if I’m not clear, like if something does not come across.’ But that was one that I’d rather not get fined $100,000. That would not go over well.”
➤ Rookie running back La’Mical Perine, on working with 16year veteran Frank Gore: “It’s an honor. I tell him that every day. I’m walking right beside him and hearing things, and he’s pretty much teaching me. I love the way he carries himself on and off the field, a wonderful person to look up to, a guy that does everything right. You can’t knock Frank Gore and nothing he does. That’s a Hall of Famer. He’s the No. 3 all-time leading rusher, and that’s an amazing accomplishment, man. I’m just trying to follow in his footsteps and learn as much as I can from him.”
