OL Lewis out for at least 3 weeks
Offensive lineman Alex Lewis will not play for the Jets for at least the next three weeks — and possibly for the remainder of the season.
The team placed Lewis, who also sat out last Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, on the nonfootball injury list on Friday.
Coach Adam Gase stressed that Lewis is not being held out for disciplinary reasons, nor is his roster spot in jeopardy. A source said Lewis is seeking medical assistance for a nonfootball issue and asked for help from the Jets, who will continue to pay his salary.
The four-year veteran is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $18.6 million, with a 2020 cap hit of $4.3 million.
Waiver pickup Pat Elflein (shoulder) officially is listed as questionable, but he is expected to replace Lewis at left guard for a second straight game Sunday against Las Vegas.
The former Vikings lineman previously was a center at Ohio State and said he grew up watching former Jets and Buckeyes center Nick Mangold, who made seven Pro Bowls in 11 years in New York.
Jets rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton on leading the most-recent Pro Bowl voting at his position in the AFC: “It’s great to see my name up there. It puts a smile on my face. But I just know I have to keep doing what I’m doing. That really don’t mean anything if I don’t keep doing what I’m doing ... but I’m not really surprised.”
➤ Offensive tackle George Fant (knee/ankle) also is questionable, but receiver Breshad Perriman (shoulder) fully returned to practice. Defensive end John Franklin-Myers also was a full participant after a false positive COVID-19 test Thursday.
Raiders coach Jon Gruden said running back Josh Jacobs (ankle) and safety Johnathan Abram will not play Sunday.
