Emergency may force Mims out vs. Seahawks

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Jets may be missing one of their top weapons on Sunday at Seattle.

Rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims had to return to his home in Texas to deal with a family emergency, according to a source. That means he is not being tested for COVID-19 and would not be eligible to play against the Seahawks if he did not return to New Jersey in time to be tested Wednesday night.

Coach Adam Gase would only say that Mims is dealing with a personal issue and hinted that the receiver might miss the game Sunday.

The Jets selected Mims in the second round of April’s draft out of Baylor. He missed the first six weeks of the season with a hamstring injury. Since returning, he has provided a deep threat and has shown an ability to make contested catches. He has 19 receptions for 324 yards. He caught a twopoint conversion pass in this past Sunday’s loss to the Raiders.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll sounds very happy with how former Jet Jamal Adams has played this season in Seattle. The Seahawks traded two first-round picks, a third-round pick and Bradley McDougald for Adams and a fourth-round pick in return in July.

“He immediately embraced the opportunity by just coming in and working hard, studying hard, competing hard,” Carroll said. “He’s been really energetic and outgoing. It’s worked out great on our end of it. He’s been very productive. He got banged up a little bit. He’s played hurt and he’s played through some stuff to stay out with his teammates, which is admirable. He’s just been really effective. I’ve been really thrilled with acquiring him to our team.”

CB Bless Austin and TE Trevon Wesco were designated to return to practice from injured reserve. … S Ashtyn Davis (foot), S Bennett Jackson (hamstring), OLB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) and G Greg Van Roten (toe) did not practice Wednesday. G Pat Elflein (shoulder/ ankle), OT George Fant (knee), RB Frank Gore (concussion), S Marcus Maye (rib), C Connor McGovern (back/hamstring) and WR Breshad Perriman (shoulder) were limited.
