NCAA: Rutgers rallies to beat Illinois

In Piscataway, Ron Harper Jr. scored 28 points, Jacob Young added 24 and No. 19 Rutgers overcame a double-digit, first-half deficit to beat No. 13 Illinois, 91-88, on Sunday.

Illinois led by as many as 11 in the first half before going into the break up, 41-37. Harper hit a 3-pointer to give Rutgers its first lead of the game at 49-47, five minutes into the second half. Harper would finish the game 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. • Seton Hall’s comeback attempt ended in overtime on a wide-open A.J. Reeves three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left as visiting Providence earned a 80-77 victory at Prudential Center.

• Sandro Mamukelash­vili (20 points) had converted a three-point play for the Pirates to even the score at 72 with eight seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Myles Cale and Jared Rhoden each added 16 points as the Hall’s four-game win streak came to an end. • Christian Bishop scored 19 points, and No. 9 Creighton beat UConn, 76-74, in overtime in Storrs, Conn., ruining the Huskies’ return to the Big East. James Bouknight scored a career-high 40 points for UConn. • In Evanston, Ill., Boo Buie scored a career-high 30 points and Northweste­rn beat Michigan State for the first time in almost a decade, topping the No. 4 Spartans 79-65 in Northweste­rn’s biggest victory since its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017.

• In Houston, Quentin Grimes had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Reggie Chaney added 18 points and six rebounds, and No. 6 Houston overcame the absence of several key players due to COVID-19 protocols and injuries to rout Alcorn State, 88-55. • In Austin, freshman Greg Brown had 24 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 11 Texas beat Oklahoma State, 77-74, in the Longhorns’ Big 12 opener. • Victor Enoh had 11 points and 15 rebounds to lift Marist to a 72-67 overtime win over Manhattan in The Bronx. Ricardo Wright had 18 points for Marist. • Tykei Greene and Frankie Policelli scored 16 points apiece as Stony Brook beat host Binghamton, 80-70, in overtime.
