‘ I LOVE IT HERE’

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Jets have some big offseason decisions to make now, including whether to re-sign free agent safety Marcus Maye.

The 2017 second-round pick had a strong season and should be one of their priorities in the offseason. Maye repeated his desire to return after Sunday’s 28-14 loss to the Patriots.

“Obviously, I love it here. I’m comfortable here,” Maye said. “But that decision is not up to me.

I can only control what I can control.”

Last offseason featured an ugly dispute between the Jets and a star safety that ended with Jamal Adams getting traded to the Seahawks. Maye’s negotiation should be much less contentious. Maye is scheduled to hit free agency in March if the Jets don’t lock him up before then.

“You never look at the end,” Maye said. “You just always go through the process, go through the journey. That’s all I’ve been doing the past four years, just enjoying my time, showing up to work every day, trying to get better, trying to come out on Sundays and win games. That time is here now, so we’ve just got to look at what’s next.”

Maye said he believes the Jets do have some building blocks for the future despite their 2-14 season.

“We’ve got some pieces that, obviously, we can add to,” Maye said. “For the most part,

I feel like the core is here. You’ve just got to get some guys in to plug in with this group of guys and go on from there. The talent’s here. There’s pieces here. It’s nothing that you have to go out looking for.”

➤ Jets rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton left the game in the third quarter with a high-ankle sprain. Rookie WR Denzel Mims exited in the first half with a concussion. Wide receiver Jeff Smith injured his shoulder and could not finish the game.

➤ The Jets ended the season with a -214 point differential, tied for the worst mark in franchise history with the 1976 team. That group only played 14 games. The Jets gave up a franchise record 457 points, topping the old mark of 454 by the 1996 team. The team’s 243 points scored is the fourthworst total in a 16-game season for the team. The 1992 team has the record with 220 points scored. … It is the first time in franchise history the Jets finished with a 2-14 record. It is their worst record since 1996, when they finished 1-15.

➤ The Jets’ 2021 slate of opponents is now known. They will play the following teams at home: Buccaneers, Saints, Titans, Jaguars, Bengals, Bills, Dolphins and Patriots. They will play these teams on the road: Falcons, Panthers, Colts, Texans, Broncos, Bills, Dolphins and Patriots. The NFL is also expected to add a 17th game, but that is not finalized.
