Late tip-in lifts Providence past Villanova

David Duke made a tiebreakin­g tip-in with 2.8 seconds left Saturday and Providence held on after blowing a 20-point lead to beat No. 10 Villanova, 54-52, in Providence, R.I.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had an open look at a 3-pointer after a long inbounds pass, but the shot hit the front of the rim, and the buzzer sounded before Jermaine Samuels tipped it in.

Already without point guard Collin Gillespie, who tore his MCL on Wednesday, the Big East champion Wildcats (16-5, 11-4 Big East) lost backup Justin Moore to an ankle injury in the first half.

Duke and Nate Watson scored 20 points apiece for Providence (13-12, 9-10).

Illinois 73, Ohio St. 68

In Columbus, Ohio, Ayo Dosunmu returned after missing three games with a concussion and facial injuries to score 19 points, and No. 4 Illinois (20-6, 16-4 Big Ten) rallied to beat No. 7 Ohio State (18-8, 12-8).

Oklahoma St. 85, West Virginia 80

In Morgantown, W. Va., Avery Anderson III scored a career-high 31 points and the No. 17 Cowboys (18-7, 11-7 Big 12), with star freshman Cade Cunningham sitting out the regular-season finale because of a sprained ankle, beat No. 6 West Virginia (18-8, 11-6).

Creighton 93, Butler 73

In Omaha, Neb., Marcus Zegarowski matched his career high with 32 points and No. 14 Creighton (18-7, 14-6 Big East) closed a difficult week that saw the suspension of coach Greg McDermott for racially insensitiv­e remarks with a victory over Butler (9-14, 8-12).

Notre Dame 83, Florida St. 73

In South Bend, Ind., Prentiss Hubb scored 22 points, Dane Goodwin had 15, and Notre Dame (10-14, 7-11 ACC) beat No. 11 Florida State (15-5, 11-4)

Purdue 67, Indiana 58

In West Lafayette, Ind., Zach Edey scored 20 points and Jaden Ivey added 17 as No. 23 Purdue (18-8, 13-6 Big Ten) beat Indiana (12-14, 7-12) for its ninth straight win in the in-state rivalry, tying the Boilermake­rs’ best run in the series since John Wooden played for them from 1929-35. Purdue beat the Hoosiers a school-record 12 straight from 1908-14.

UConn 98, Georgetown 82

In Storrs, Conn., James Bouknight had 21 points as Connecticu­t (14-6, 11-5 Big East) got past Georgetown (9-12, 7-9). Jalen Gaffney had 15 points for UConn, which won its fourth consecutiv­e game.

North Carolina 91, Duke 73

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Armando Bacot, Kerwin Walton and Caleb Love scored 18 points apiece, and North Carolina (16-9, 10-6 ACC) never trailed in beating Duke (11-11, 9-9) in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Mount St. Mary’s 66, Wagner 60

In Staten Island, Damian Chong Qui and Nana Opoku each had 14 points to carry Mount St. Mary’s to a win over Wagner in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference tournament.

Will Martinez had 17 points for the Seahawks (13-7). Elijah Ford added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
