It wasn’t Liz or Phil
It’s what they didn’t say that’s grabbing all the attention.
Neither Queen Elizabeth II nor Prince Philip was involved in conversations about the skin color of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son, Archie, Oprah Winfrey said on Monday.
Harry “did not share the identity with me, but he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather that were part of those conversations,” Winfrey told “CBS This Morning” a day after her sit-down with the couple aired on the network.
During the interview, Markle said that while she was pregnant with Archie, someone in the royal family raised “concerns” over how dark the baby’s skin might be.
“All around this same time, we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title,’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she said.
Pressed by Winfrey, Harry refused to name names.
“That conversation I am never going to share, but at the time it was awkward. I was a bit shocked,” he said.
He said only that the discussion of “what will the kids look like” came early in their relationship.
“That was right at the beginning, when she wasn’t going to get security, when members of my family were suggesting that she carries on acting, because there was not enough money to pay for her, all this sort of stuff,” he said.
