Dems quiz Zuck on gun ad siting

-

A group of 23 House Democrats on Monday asked Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg for answers about the site’s practices regarding targeted ads for gun accessories and protective equipment.

The lawmakers, led by House Energy Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone of New Jersey, cited reports the ads were shown “next to content that amplified election misinformation” and news about the Capitol siege after Jan. 6.

“Targeting ads in this way is dangerous and has the potential to encourage acts of violence,” the lawmakers wrote.

“Furthermore, Facebook should inform advertisers about surrounding content, and make the necessary changes to guarantee that Facebook and companies’ ad dollars are not further supporting or sowing seeds of hate and distrust throughout the country,” the letter said.

Facebook did not immediately comment.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in January slammed Zuckerberg for what she said was his role in fomenting the riot at Capitol Hill.

“He is part of this problem,” the New York Democrat said. The social media magnate, she said, has coddled white supremacist groups on Facebook — and even, she charged, attended “dinner parties with white supremacist sympathizers.”

Last month, Facebook said it would begin to scale down political content in its news feeds in Canada, Brazil, Indonesia and the US.

The social-networking giant said it would “temporarily reduce” the content for a “small percentage of people” in those countries.

Zuckerberg said last month that he wanted to “turn down the temperature” of political news on the site because “people don’t want politics and fighting to take over their experience on our services.”

Shares of Facebook fell 3.4 percent, to $255.31.
