Doubleheaders stacking up at an Amazin’ rate

- By MIKE PUMA

The Mets eventually opened the gates at Citi Field on Thursday but, before long, were closing them.

With the tarp never removed from the field, the Mets postponed their game against the Phillies, after rain began falling shortly before the 12:10 p.m. scheduled first pitch.

The game is scheduled to be made up on June 25 as part of a doubleheader beginning at 4:10 p.m. Overall, the Mets have had six games postponed or suspended this month. One, against the Phillies, was made up as part of Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Mets also have a June 19 doubleheader scheduled in Washington as a makeup for a game postponed in the season’s opening series, after Nationals players tested positive for COVID-19. The Mets have another doubleheader scheduled for Sept. 4 in Washington. They will resume their game against the Marlins on Aug. 31 as part of a doubleheader.

Jacob deGrom is now scheduled to start Friday in Colorado, but there are questions about that game with snow in the forecast and temperatures that could plunge into the 20s.

“I think we made [the Rockies] aware that we aren’t going to hit on the field [Friday],” manager Luis Rojas said. “But we haven’t talked about the weather. … We are expecting to play, but we haven’t contacted them about it.”

DeGrom never threw his pregame bullpen session Thursday, as the Mets escaped the predicament they faced four days earlier against the Marlins. The Mets chose to start that game and sent Marcus Stroman to the mound for nine pitches before the game was suspended by a downpour.

➤ Joey Lucchesi and Stroman are the Mets’ scheduled starting pitchers behind deGrom for the three-game series in Colorado. If deGrom had pitched Thursday, Rojas would have considered Robert Gsellman for the Saturday start, with Lucchesi pitching Friday.

Gsellman last faced batters on March 29 in spring training but has been “working hard,” according to Rojas.

The manager does not plan to employ an opener for Lucchesi’s start, which will be his first with the Mets. The left-hander was used from the bullpen last week in Philadelphia.

➤ J.D. Davis is eligible for removal from the injured list Saturday, and Rojas said he could “potentially” be activated that day.

The third baseman has been sidelined with a bruised left hand he sustained after getting drilled by a pitch in the Mets’ first series in Philadelphia.

“He’s looked good in BP,” Rojas said. “He’s taken his ground balls and done his running and done everything he needs to do to get in there. I don’t think we are going to get him to see live pitching before he gets in there, that would be something where we wish we could do it.”

Luis Guillorme and Jonathan Villar have played third base in Davis’ absence.

“The pain has diminished a lot, significantly, and we’ll see how [Davis] feels,” Rojas said.

➤ Carlos Carrasco threw four innings (65 pitches) of live batting practice in Port St. Lucie, with Mets officials watching on a live feed.

“He is throwing the ball good, up and downs, so it’s building up correctly,” Rojas said.

Carrasco, who is rehabbing his right hamstring, may next pitch in a game at the Mets’ alternate training site, but Rojas said it’s also possible he will remain in Florida to participate in a minor league scrimmage.
