Former Pats CB visits with Jints

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

The Giants took a look at a player quite familiar to head coach Joe Judge on Friday, bringing veteran cornerback Jason McCourty in for a visit to their team facility.

McCourty, 33, and his twin brother, Devin, have New Jersey ties as graduates of St. Joseph Regional High in Montvale and Rutgers. The two veteran defensive backs were among the team captains last season for the Patriots.

This is an interesting possibility for the Giants, although a signing is not con- sidered to be imminent. This might have been more of a look-see for the player and the team, although something could materialize by way of a contract in the future.

Judge wants to craft a young team and the defense seems fairly stacked in the secondary, but there is always room for an experienced player who can add savvy and talent to the back end. Jason McCourty, who will turn 34 in August, was a sixth-round pick of the Titans and spent eight seasons in Tennessee, one with the Browns and the past three years playing for Bill Belichick in New England.

McCourty has played 166 games, with 137 starts. He has 18 career interceptions, nine forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. Jason and Devin became the first twins to win a Super Bowl together when the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII.

The Giants fortified their cornerback situation with the signing in free agency of Adoree’ Jackson to pair alongside James Bradberry in the starting lineup. The Giants have Darnay Holmes as a slot corner entering his second NFL season, as well as Isaac Yiadom, who started 10 games in 2020, as they search for an outside corner to use with Bradberry. There is also Sam Beal, who has barely played since he was selected in the 2018 supplemental draft.

Judge was with McCourty with the Patriots in 2018 and 2019. The Giants already have one player in their defensive backfield, safety Logan Ryan, with ties to Judge from their time together in New England.
