‘Terrible’ Judge hard on himself

- By GREG JOYCE

Aaron Judge knows he has had a rough time at the plate recently, but he’s hoping Saturday will mark the start of his climb out of hole he recently dug for himself.

The Yankees right fielder was mired in an 0-for-16 slump with 11 strikeouts entering his at-bat in the ninth inning Saturday. He snapped out of it with a single poked to no-man’s land down the right-field line, setting up Gleyber Torres’ game-tying hit before the Yankees went on to beat the Nationals 4-3 in 11 innings.

“I’ve been terrible at the plate,” Judge said. “Just being a little overaggressive. Especially with Houston coming in and then facing the Nationals, really trying to just do too much at the plate.”

At the start of the current homestand, Judge had come out of his time off for lower-body soreness with a hot bat. But that quickly gave way to the skid he brought into Saturday.

“It’ll turn around,” Judge said. “Usually that’s how you start a hitting streak is with a little bloop or a dinker like that. So hopefully we’re on the right track.”

➤ Gio Urshela was doing “much better” on Saturday, manager Aaron Boone said, two days after the third baseman injured his left knee and had an MRI exam that showed no structural damage.

Still, he remained out of the lineup against the Nationals. Boone had yet to determine whether Urshela would be back Sunday or if he would need a few more days before returning in the series at Tampa Bay, which begins Tuesday.

➤ Luke Voit is inching closer to his Yankees return.

The first baseman, coming back from surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus, was scheduled to play seven innings in the field Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before being the DH on Sunday.

➤ Zack Britton may not be far off from going out on a rehab assignment of his own. The lefthanded reliever, who had surgery in March to remove a bone chip from his elbow, threw a bullpen session Friday with sliders and is set to throw another one Tuesday.
