MLB: Rays extend AL East lead

Francisco Mejia singled with the bases loaded in the ninth, and an error on the play by Red Sox right fielder Hunter Renfroe led to three runs, helping the Rays extend their lead in the AL East to five games with a 8-4 victory Tuesday night in Boston.

In Philadelph­ia, Corey Seager and Max Muncy homered and the Dodgers ended the Phillies’ eight-game winning streak, with a 5-0 victory. AJ Pollock added a two-run single for the Dodgers.

In Atlanta, Adam Duvall hit a tworun homer, Stephen Vogt’s bases-loaded walk in the sixth forced in the go-ahead run and the Braves beat the Reds 3-2.

In Cleveland, Jed Lowrie delivered an RBI double in the 10th inning and the Athletics moved into the top AL wild-card spot, beating the Indians 4-3.

In Anaheim, Calif., Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit an early RBI single and the Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-0 on Tuesday night to split a doublehead­er. Justin Upton and Phil Gosselin each had two hits and two RBIs to help the Angels win the opener 6-3. NBA: Schroder signs with Celtics

Dennis Schroder confirmed on his Instagram account that he has agreed to a one-year deal with the Celtics. According to published reports, Schroder’s deal is for the $5.9 million mid-level exception.

Schroder, 27, reportedly turned down a four-year, $84 million extension from the Lakers during last season.

Free agent forward Andre Iguodala is returning to the Warriors, where he won three NBA titles and a NBA Finals MVP by signing a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $2,642,000.

NFL: Watt, Steelers talk new contract

Outside linebacker T.J. Watt is continuing to sit out team drills, including anything involving hitting, while he and the Steelers attempt to negotiate a long-term contract.

Watt, the younger brother of Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt, has started all 62 games and led the NFL in 2020 with 15 sacks.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said quarterbac­k Drew Lock will start at Minnesota on Saturday night, following a pair of joint practices with the Vikings, and Teddy Bridgewate­r will start the following weekend at Seattle.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski did not provide any specifics on All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett’s hamstring injury, but he was held out of practice and is day-to-day.

ETC: Medvedev advances

Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto, defeating Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a match that was briefly suspended by rain.

On the women’s side, in Montreal, defending champion Bianca Andreescu, the No. 2 seed, beat qualifier Harriet Dart 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted just over two hours.

Errol Spence Jr. has dropped out of his pay-per-view fight with Manny Pacquiao on Aug. 21 because of a retinal tear in his left eye. WBA welterweig­ht champion Yordenis Ugas will step in to face Pacquiao at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the same date, the promoters announced.

Lionel Messi signed his Paris SaintGerma­in contract with a two-year deal with the option for a third season. A person with knowledge of the negotiatio­ns earlier told The Associated Press that Messi is set to earn around $41 million net annually.
