Longtime boss out as shake-up begins at ESPN NY

The big changes at 98.7 ESPN New York have begun with its impending sale looming.

ESPN New York’s GM Tim McCarthy will be out at the end of the month, McCarthy confirmed to The Post. McCarthy emailed his staff with the news Wednesday morning.

McCarthy has been with Disney for more than three decades, and has spent nearly a quarter-century as the New York radio GM, between WABC and ESPN New York.

McCarthy, 58, began with the station two decades ago. He was at the helm when ESPN New York — with Michael Kay, Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg — finally overtook Mike Francesa in the afternoon ratings a few years back.

A lot of ESPN top national sportscast­ers went through 98.7, including Stephen A. Smith, Michelle Beadle and Max Kellerman.

In July, The Post reported that Good Karma Brands, a radio company, is expected to take over ESPN New York, as well as ESPN’s station in Los Angeles.

While the sale is not finalized, when it is, ESPN, in Bristol, Conn., will still be responsibl­e for programmin­g, while Good Karma handles sales and marketing. ESPN already has a similar relationsh­ip with its station in Chicago.

In New York, ESPN is the clear No. 2 sports station in the city, behind WFAN. Most of its issues have been induced by its schedules constantly changing, because of Bristol’s commitment to national programmin­g in New York.

McCarthy doesn’t know yet what he is going to do next as he has focused on taking care of the station.

“While it is bitterswee­t to say goodbye, I am excited and ready to begin a new chapter,” McCarthy said. “The adventure continues! I am certain that our paths will cross again.”

He added that Disney has been very good to him over the years.

McCarthy’s last day for ESPN will be Sept. 30.
